Sofwave vs. Ultraformer MPT: How Two Ultrasound Devices Differ
Medically reviewed by Jane Yoo, MD, MPP, dermatologist and Mohs surgeon. Last reviewed 11/04/2026.
The short answer: Both devices use ultrasound energy to heat tissue below the skin’s surface and stimulate collagen, but they deliver it differently. Sofwave uses synchronized ultrasound pulses aimed at a mid-depth layer of the dermis. Ultraformer MPT uses micro-focused ultrasound with a choice of cartridges that reach different depths. The right choice depends on your goals, your anatomy and what your practitioner recommends.
First, what ultrasound tightening does
Ultrasound energy is delivered through the skin and creates heat at a chosen depth. The body responds to controlled heat by remodeling collagen over the following weeks to months. The goal is gradual firming and lift, not the effect of surgery.
How the two devices differ
| Feature | Sofwave | Ultraformer MPT |
|---|---|---|
| Type of ultrasound | Synchronized ultrasound pulses (marketed as SUPERB) | Micro-focused ultrasound |
| Depth | Mid-dermis, one fixed target depth | Multiple cartridges targeting different depths |
| Cleared uses | Facial lines and wrinkles, eyebrow lifting, lifting lax tissue beneath the chin and on the neck, acne scars, upper-arm skin laxity, and short-term improvement in cellulite appearance | No FDA-cleared U.S. indications verified. Marketed internationally for noninvasive skin lifting and tightening |
| Typical sensation | Warming and sometimes moderate discomfort. Topical numbing may help | Heat and temporary discomfort, varying with depth, energy settings and treatment area |
| Downtime | Usually minimal. Temporary redness or swelling may occur; many patients resume normal activities the same day | Usually minimal. Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness or occasional bruising may occur |
| Best known for | Mid-dermal collagen remodeling, wrinkle improvement and nonsurgical skin tightening | Customizable focused-ultrasound treatments at multiple depths for facial and body tightening |
What to expect from any ultrasound treatment
- Results develop gradually over weeks to months
- Results are modest compared with surgery
- Comfort varies. Ask about numbing and pain control
- Good candidates usually have mild to moderate laxity
- The skin is not removed or cut
Who may not be a good fit
People with significant skin laxity, heavy jowls or loose neck skin may not get the result they hope for from any energy-based device and may be better served by other options.
Other tightening options to know about
Ultrasound is one of several approaches, along with radiofrequency, RF microneedling and fractional lasers. They work in different ways and are chosen for different goals.
Questions to ask before treatment
- What is this device cleared for?
- Why this device for me, instead of another approach?
- What results can I realistically expect, and by when?
- What are the risks and how are they managed?
- How many treatments, and what upkeep, are typical?
Frequently asked questions
Is Sofwave better than Ultraformer? Neither is better for everyone. They target different depths and have different strengths.
Do ultrasound treatments hurt? Sensation varies by device, energy and area. Ask about comfort measures.
How long do results last? Results fade as natural aging continues. A practitioner can advise on timing.
Is there downtime? Often minimal, but it depends on the device and settings.
