FDA Approval Status

On June 9, 2026, the FDA officially approved bemotrizinol as a new sunscreen active ingredient under its updated Over-the-Counter (OTC) sunscreen monograph standards — the first new active ingredient added to U.S. sunscreens in over 25 years. The approval becomes effective August 9, 2026.

In the U.S., bemotrizinol will initially be sold under DSM-Firmenich’s brand name, PARSOL® Shield, which holds an 18-month period of market exclusivity. Internationally, the same ingredient has been marketed for decades under the name Tinosorb® S by BASF — a name you may already recognize from Korean, Japanese, or European sunscreens.

Now that it’s approved, bemotrizinol-containing sunscreens are expected to begin reaching U.S. shelves later in 2026 and into 2027, giving American consumers access to advanced sun protection technology that’s been trusted abroad for over two decades.
