For years, PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) has had one dominant backstory: it comes from salmon or trout sperm DNA, and it’s become a mainstay in K-beauty skin boosters and regenerative treatments for its wound-healing and collagen-stimulating reputation. But new research is introducing a very different source for the same molecule, and it’s not swimming in the ocean at all. It’s floating in it.
What Is PDRN, Again?
PDRN is a fragment of DNA that, when applied to skin, doesn’t act like genetic material so much as a signal. It binds to a receptor on skin cells called the adenosine A2A receptor, and that interaction kicks off a cascade of repair processes: cells multiply and migrate to injured areas faster, collagen production ramps up, and new blood vessels form to support healing tissue. That’s the basic mechanism behind why PDRN shows up in wound care, post-procedure recovery, and skin-boosting injectables.
A New Source: Microalgae Instead of Fish
A team of South Korean researchers, working as part of a national initiative backed by the country’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, set out to see whether PDRN could be produced from Chlorella protothecoides, a type of microalgae, instead of fish DNA. Amorepacific’s research division was involved in the effort, and the resulting ingredient has been nicknamed “Blue PDRN.”
In lab testing on skin cells, the microalgae-derived PDRN performed comparably to traditional salmon-sourced versions. It boosted the proliferation and movement of keratinocytes and fibroblasts (the workhorse cells of the skin’s outer and structural layers), and it triggered the same downstream effects associated with healing: increased expression of growth arrest specific 6 (GAS6) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), higher collagen type I production, and more robust formation of new blood vessels through elevated vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) activity. All of this traced back to the same A2A receptor pathway that fish-derived PDRN relies on.
Why Sustainability Matters Here
Sourcing PDRN from microalgae rather than fish addresses two things at once: scalability and ethics. Fish-derived PDRN depends on byproducts from the seafood industry, which can create supply constraints. Microalgae, by contrast, can be cultivated in controlled systems without relying on marine harvests, making it both a more scalable option and a vegan-friendly alternative for people who prefer to avoid animal-derived ingredients in their skincare or injectable treatments.
What This Could Mean Going Forward
This research is early-stage from a commercial standpoint, but it points to where regenerative skincare ingredients may be headed: away from animal sourcing and toward more sustainable, lab-cultivated alternatives that don’t sacrifice efficacy. If microalgae-derived PDRN moves into broader use, it could eventually show up in skin boosters, wound-care products, and post-procedure recovery formulas as a vegan-compatible option alongside, or instead of, traditional salmon PDRN.
