For a long time, longevity science has belonged to the worlds of oral supplements and specialized wellness clinics. A new partnership between Lancome and Swiss biotech firm Timeline is aiming to bring that science into everyday skincare, and as a dermatologist, I think it is worth paying attention to.
A Molecule With a Long Research History
The centerpiece of this collaboration is Urolithin A, a compound that forms in the gut when certain plant polyphenols from foods like pomegranates are metabolized. Timeline has developed a purified, bioavailable form of this compound called Mitopure, which has been studied extensively in the context of oral supplementation for muscle health and cellular aging.
Urolithin A is known to support mitophagy, the process by which cells identify and break down worn-out mitochondria. Healthy mitochondria are essential for cellular energy production, and their function tends to decline as we age. By encouraging the clearance of damaged mitochondria, Urolithin A may help support healthier, more energized cells. Most of the published research on this mechanism has focused on oral dosing. Applying it topically is a newer direction.
Why This Launch Is Notable
What sets this apart from typical anti-aging product launches is the framing. Rather than promising to reduce the appearance of fine lines or even out skin tone, Lancome is positioning this range around the concept of biological skin age and long-term skin health. The goal, at least in theory, is not to cover up aging but to intervene at a cellular level.
This fits into a broader trajectory Lancome has been on for several years now, investing in diagnostics and science-driven approaches to skin aging. The brand has previously explored skin biomarker analysis and ingredients that target cellular metabolism. The Timeline collaboration is the latest step in that direction, and notably the first product to come out of L’Oreal Group’s 2024 investment in Timeline.
The new range is expected to be introduced at the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting in late March 2026.
