If you’ve ever picked up a moisturizer labeled “hydrating” and wondered what that actually means chemically, you’re asking the right question. Almost every moisturizer on the market relies on a combination of three ingredient categories: humectants, emollients, and occlusives. Each does something distinctly different, and understanding the difference can help you choose products with intention instead of relying on vague marketing language.

Humectants: The Water Magnets

Humectants are ingredients that attract and bind water. They work by drawing moisture into the outermost layer of skin, the stratum corneum, either from the deeper layers of your skin or from the surrounding air.

Common humectants include:

  • Glycerin
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Urea
  • Lactic acid
  • Components of the skin’s natural moisturizing factor

Humectants are why certain products make skin look plump, flexible, and hydrated almost immediately. But there’s an important catch: humectants don’t prevent water from escaping the skin on their own. In very dry environments, using a humectant by itself can actually increase water loss, since it can pull moisture up from lower layers of skin and then let it evaporate into dry air if nothing seals it in. This is exactly why humectants work best when layered with an emollient or occlusive rather than used alone.

Emollients: The Smoothers and Repairers

Emollients are lipid-based ingredients that smooth and soften skin by filling in the gaps between skin cells in the stratum corneum. Think of them as the ingredient category responsible for that “even, soft” feeling right after applying a good moisturizer.

Common emollients include:

  • Fatty acids and fatty alcohols
  • Triglycerides
  • Esters
  • Ceramides
  • Squalane
  • Certain silicones

Emollients also support barrier recovery by improving membrane fluidity and reinforcing the skin’s natural lipid matrix. While they do modestly reduce water loss, their primary job isn’t hydration, it’s texture, comfort, and helping repair the skin barrier itself.

Occlusives: The Sealants

Occlusives create a physical barrier on the surface of skin that slows down water evaporation. Unlike humectants, occlusives don’t add any water to skin, they’re purely about locking in the moisture that’s already there.

Classic occlusives include:

  • Petrolatum
  • Dimethicone
  • Lanolin
  • Beeswax
  • Mineral oil
  • Various waxes

Petrolatum deserves a special mention here, it’s considered one of the most effective occlusives available, capable of significantly reducing transepidermal water loss. Because occlusives can feel heavier or greasier on the skin, they’re often reserved for nighttime routines or targeted use on especially dry patches, rather than applied all over as a daytime step.

How They Work Together

The most effective moisturizers combine all three categories, and each has a specific job in that formula:

  1. Humectants draw water into the skin
  2. Emollients smooth the surface and help repair the barrier
  3. Occlusives seal everything in to prevent water loss

The right balance of these three depends heavily on your skin type, your environment, and what your skin actually needs at the moment. Lighter gels and lotions, which tend to lean more heavily on humectants and lightweight emollients, are often better suited for oily skin or humid climates. Thicker creams and ointments, which bring more occlusive power to the table, tend to be more appropriate for conditions like eczema, xerosis (dry skin), or a compromised skin barrier.
