Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to visit the L’Oréal Research & Innovation Center in Clark, New Jersey, at the invitation of the SkinCeuticals Medical Affairs team.
I was joined by several colleagues in dermatology and plastic surgery, including Dr. Jared Jagdeo, Dr. Kachiu Lee, Dr. Amanda Doyle, Dr. David Shafer, and Dr. Jennifer Levine, for a behind-the-scenes look at how skincare products move from early research to finished formulations.
Inside the Research and Development Process
The visit included an overview of L’Oréal’s research pipeline, a tour of the facility and laboratories, and discussions about ingredient science and formulation development.
What stood out to me was how many factors influence whether a skincare product performs as intended. The active ingredient is only one part of the equation. Stability, concentration, pH, delivery system, ingredient compatibility, and packaging can all affect how well a formula works and how easily the skin tolerates it.
This is especially relevant when patients ask whether two products containing the same ingredient are interchangeable. In many cases, they are not. Two vitamin C serums, for example, may differ significantly depending on how the vitamin C is stabilized and delivered.
Connecting Research to Patient Care
As a dermatologist, I spend much of my time evaluating skin concerns, performing procedures, and helping patients build practical skincare routines. Understanding the research behind the products I recommend helps me explain why certain formulations may be more appropriate than others.
One discussion focused on the science behind SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Interrupter Ultra Serum and the formulation decisions supporting its use for visible signs of aging. Seeing how researchers evaluate ingredients and develop these formulas added helpful context to the clinical claims patients often encounter.
Why Formulation Matters
A product can contain a well-known ingredient and still fail to deliver meaningful results if the overall formula is unstable, irritating, or unable to deliver that ingredient effectively.
That does not mean every skincare routine needs to be complicated or expensive. It does mean that ingredient lists and marketing claims rarely tell the full story.
The visit was a valuable reminder that evidence-based skincare depends not only on which ingredients are included, but also on how they are formulated, tested, and used within a thoughtful routine.
