What Saddle Sores Actually Are

“Saddle sores” is a general term for several different skin concerns that can develop in the saddle area during cycling, and they are not all the same problem:

  • Friction irritation: Raw, chafed skin caused by repeated rubbing against a saddle or cycling shorts
  • Folliculitis: Inflamed and sometimes pus-filled bumps around the hair follicles, often caused by sweat, bacteria, pressure, and friction trapped beneath tight shorts
  • Pressure-related nodules or cysts: Deeper and more painful lumps that can develop from sustained pressure during long rides, particularly in cyclists logging high weekly mileage

All three share similar contributing factors: friction, moisture, prolonged pressure, and limited airflow. This combination is why prevention is often more effective than trying to treat a sore after it has already formed.

Prevention Starts with the Right Barrier Product

A chamois cream or anti-chafe balm applied before a ride creates a smooth barrier between the skin and cycling shorts. This reduces the friction that can lead to irritation.

The same types of anti-chafe products used for running and everyday chafing may also be helpful for cycling, although application technique matters because of the amount of time spent in the saddle.

Hygiene Matters as Much as the Barrier Product

Remaining in damp cycling shorts after a ride is one of the biggest contributors to irritation and folliculitis in the saddle area. Bacteria can multiply quickly in a warm, moist environment.

  • Change out of cycling shorts as soon as possible after finishing a ride.
  • Use an alcohol-free cleansing wipe when a shower is not immediately available, especially after a long ride or a training day with multiple stops.
  • Wash cycling shorts after every wear. Reusing unwashed chamois padding can contribute to recurring irritation.
  • Avoid wearing tight, non-breathable underwear beneath cycling shorts, since this adds another layer that can trap moisture and increase friction.

When It Is More Than Simple Chafing

A sore that is deep, very painful, does not improve within a few days, or keeps returning in the same area despite proper hygiene and prevention should be evaluated.

Recurring nodules or cysts in the saddle area may require a different approach than an over-the-counter barrier product. A dermatologist can determine whether the concern is simple friction, folliculitis, a cyst, or another condition that needs targeted treatment.

A Simple Pre-Ride and Post-Ride Routine

  • Apply an anti-chafe balm directly to clean, dry skin before getting into the saddle.
  • Reapply during rides lasting longer than two to three hours.
  • Change out of damp cycling shorts immediately after riding.
  • Wipe down sweat-prone areas when a shower is not immediately available.
  • Wash cycling shorts after every ride.
