Running the 2026 Tokyo Marathon
Running has always been one of the most grounding things in my life. So when I crossed the finish line of the Tokyo Marathon after several hours on the course, the feeling was not just physical relief. It was something much more fulfilling than that.
Running through the streets of Tokyo felt electric. I am also very grateful I did not get swept up by the sweepers, which was very much a real possibility I was thinking about. Completing a World Marathon Major is one of those goals that lives in the back of your mind for a long time before it becomes real, and this one delivered in every way.
What makes Tokyo stand out among the majors is hard to fully put into words. The course is flat, the city is immaculate, and the race organization is the kind of seamless that makes you realize how much thought went into every detail.
One very important detail: Pocari Sweat is available all along the course!
The weekend started with a shakeout run around the Imperial Palace with Team Abbott on Saturday, which set exactly the right tone before race day. There is something about starting a race weekend with that kind of energy and community that carries you further than you expect.
Running reminds me that showing up consistently, even when it is hard, is what gets you to the finish line. That is true in medicine, in life, and apparently also in marathons. Endless gratitude to the volunteers, pacers, and everyone who lined the streets. Tokyo, you were incredible.
