If you’ve shopped for sunscreen at Olive Young, H Mart, or an import beauty retailer, or bought sunscreen while traveling in Europe, Korea, or Japan, there’s a good chance you’ve already seen “Tinosorb S” on an ingredient list. It’s one of the most respected UV filters in the world, and dermatologists outside the U.S. have recommended it for over two decades. What many patients don’t realize is that Tinosorb S, bemotrizinol, and PARSOL Shield are the same ingredient with three different names — and as of June 2026, it’s finally approved for use in U.S. sunscreens too.

This is the single most confusing part of the story for consumers, so let’s clear it up directly:
- Tinosorb S: the trade name most commonly used internationally, especially on Korean, Japanese, and European product labels
- Bemotrizinol : the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) name, and the name used in the FDA’s official approval and monograph language
- BEMT: a shorthand abbreviation commonly used in cosmetic chemistry circles and ingredient education
- PARSOL Shield: the branded formulation name used by DSM-Firmenich, the manufacturer that filed the FDA submission
If you’re reading a U.S. sunscreen label after August 2026, you’re most likely to see “bemotrizinol” in the active ingredients panel. If you’re reading a Korean or European label, “Tinosorb S” is far more common. Same molecule, same mechanism, different regulatory and marketing conventions.
Why This Ingredient Has Such a Strong Reputation Internationally
Tinosorb S has been used safely in sunscreens in Europe since 2000, and in Asia and Australia for a similar stretch of time. Dermatologists in those markets have had a full generation of clinical experience with it. A few reasons it’s earned that reputation:
- Genuine broad-spectrum coverage. It absorbs both UVB (around 310nm) and UVA (around 340nm) in a single molecule, rather than requiring a blend of multiple filters to cover the same range.
- Photostability. Unlike avobenzone, the most common UVA filter in older U.S. formulas, Tinosorb S doesn’t break down with sun exposure. A filter that degrades in sunlight gives you a false sense of protection exactly when you need it most.
- Cosmetic elegance. It’s a large molecule with low water solubility, which tends to translate into lightweight, non-greasy formulas that layer well under makeup, part of why it shows up so often in the Korean and European sunscreens patients already love.
Why the U.S. Didn’t Have This Until Now

In the U.S., sunscreens are classified as over-the-counter drugs, not cosmetics, which means new filters go through a much higher approval bar than in most of the rest of the world.
