Blisters 101: How to Prevent, Treat, and Heal Them Fast

Why Blisters Form

A blister is the skin’s response to repeated friction. When skin rubs against a shoe, sock, or another surface over and over, the top layers separate and fluid collects in the gap to cushion the area underneath. This creates the fluid-filled bubble most people recognize. Heat, moisture, and poorly fitting shoes all speed up this process, which is why blisters show up so often with new sneakers, sandals, long hikes, or hot summer days.

A few ground rules before getting into products:

  • Do not pop a blister unless it is large, painful, and likely to burst on its own. The intact skin over a blister is the best protection against infection.
  • If a blister does pop, gently clean the area, avoid picking at the loose skin, and cover it to keep dirt and bacteria out.
  • Watch for signs of infection, including increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or pus, and see a doctor if any of these symptoms appear.

The right product depends on where a blister is in its life cycle: prevention before it forms, cushioning once it is there, or healing once it has popped or needs to close.

Prevention: Moleskin

Moleskin is a soft, woven cotton fabric with an adhesive backing, and it is one of the simplest ways to stop a blister before it starts. It works by cushioning a friction-prone area and creating a smooth barrier between the skin and shoe, so the rubbing that causes a blister never has the chance to build.

  • Dr. Scholl’s Moleskin Padding Strips: Available as a roll or pre-cut strips that can be trimmed to fit any area, whether that is the heel, toe, or side of the foot. It is thin enough that it should not significantly change how a shoe fits.

How to use it: Apply moleskin to a known problem area, such as a heel that always rubs or a toe that repeatedly catches, before putting on your shoes. Do not wait until irritation has already started.

Cushioning and Treatment: Hydrocolloid Bandages

Hydrocolloid bandages work differently from moleskin. Instead of simply padding the area, they contain a gel-forming material that creates a moist, protective layer over the blister. This moist environment can support healing, cushion ongoing pressure, and create a water-resistant seal that helps keep dirt and bacteria out.

  • Compeed Advanced Blister Care Pads: One of the most well-known hydrocolloid options and a favorite for its “second skin” feel. It is form-fitting, waterproof, and designed to stay in place through a full day in shoes, heels, or sandals.

A Quick Note on Removal

Hydrocolloid bandages are very adhesive, and on dry skin they can occasionally pull off the blister roof along with the bandage. This is especially important to keep in mind during long hikes, runs, or all-day events. Remove the bandage gently, ideally after a shower when the skin and adhesive are softer.

Which to Use and When

  • Have a known hot spot before leaving the house? Apply moleskin before putting on your shoes.
  • Already have a blister and need cushioning that lasts all day? Use a hydrocolloid pad such as Compeed or Band-Aid Pro Heal.
  • Has the blister already popped? Gently clean the area, then cover it with a hydrocolloid bandage to protect the exposed skin and support healing.

When to See a Dermatologist

Most blisters heal within one or two weeks with basic care. Reach out to a dermatologist if a blister looks infected, if blisters keep forming in the same spot despite prevention, or if blisters appear without an obvious friction-related cause. Recurrent or unexplained blistering can sometimes point to an underlying skin condition that is worth investigating.
